Set your rules before you roll
Lock honestly. The coach can only balance around what you give it — lock the Pokémon you're actually committed to, not the whole wishlist.
Read the reason before you re-roll. 'New coverage' and 'tanky pivot' are telling you what your squad was missing; if the same reason keeps appearing, that's your team's real problem.
One re-roll per slot is a good house rule — endless re-rolls turn the coach into a slow random generator.
A sample fix
Lock Garchomp, Rotom-Wash and Corviknight and the coach might answer with a Fire type for the Steel matchup, a Ground immune for the shared weakness, and a wildcard 'for new coverage' — the exact conversation a good teammate would have with you.
