Why roll a random starter?

The first partner sets the tone of an entire playthrough — and choosing one yourself takes forty minutes of forum threads. Let the dice pick from every generation's starters, from Kanto to Paldea, and start the run already.

Ways to play

Starter decider

Roll once and that's your partner for the next run — the decision is made, the adventure can start.

Nuzlocke opener

Let the roll choose the starter, then the route luck chooses everything else — full commitment, zero bias.

Debate settler

Fire, Water or Grass this time? The dice have no nostalgia and no favourites — perfect referee.

Team theme

Roll a starter and build a team that supports its final evolution — instant structure for a casual squad.

Set your rules before you roll

The starter pact is sacred: first roll stands. Vetoing the result because you wanted the frog defeats the entire point.

Decide the pool first — all nine generations, or only the games you own? A smaller pool is still a fair roll.

For group runs, everyone rolls in the open and trades are allowed exactly once — that's the whole meta-game.

A sample roll

The dice say Chimchar, and your Sinnoh run suddenly has a personality: fast, loud, and slightly on fire. You'd never have picked it over Piplup — which is exactly why this playthrough will be memorable.

Keep the run going?

Roll the rest of the squad on the random team generator or type generator — the starter has chosen, now the team needs six.

FAQ

What counts as a starter Pokémon?

Starters are the first-partner Pokémon — the trio of Grass, Fire and Water offered at the start of each mainline game, from Bulbasaur in Kanto to Sprigatito in Paldea.

Which generations are included?

All of them — every regional starter from Generation I through IX, including the Hisui and Paldea variations where they exist.

Can I roll a full team of starters?

Yes — roll six and you have a starter-only squad for a challenge run or a Showdown theme team.

Why would I use a random starter?

It removes choice paralysis: the dice pick your next playthrough's partner, and you build the run around whatever you get.
